Abstract: The collection includes copies of essays and addresses presented at the club’s meetings, programs, meeting minutes, correspondence, publications, financial records, and other records of the Saturday Night Literary Club. The essays include virtually all topics. The Saturday Night Literary Club was founded in Topeka, Kansas in 1883, in the post-Civil War era of articulate literacy and enthusiasm about the democratic process. Some of its customs reflect that era: Each member is identified with a State and addresses the Chair as in a legislative assembly. Another tradition, often honored by its omission, is that each essay must contain reference to the Civil War, Indians, and Sex. Also included are documents pertaining to the opening up of membership to women in 2011, the end of the year Ladies’ Night now Gentlepersons’ Night Program Announcements and a 2010 new member handout entitled “The Saturday Night Literary Club–A History, 1883-2010.”
